Explore LIFE IN A NORTHERN TOWN
A digital story of the American Midwest (also on Medium – 2017 Medium Series Editors’ Pick)
Massive debts due yesterday lead a Minnesota farm family to an unscrupulous business partner. With this “land rental arrangement,” they soon find themselves at the heart of North American drug distribution, with more complications than they ever imagined.
The teenage kids start asking questions. Neighbors start nosing around. (“What are you planting this year?”) And when the boss needs a referral for a food delivery job in the North Dakota oil fields, they send out the laid-off artist sister to assist. (“We wanted to help, that’s just who we are.”)
Insulted at first by her fall in status and the camper she’s forced to call home (“think of it as a tiny house”), the sister soon acclimates – all too well. She makes friends. She starts a side business. She finds herself a boyfriend. And when she discovers the truth about her deliveries, she flees the state, drawing the attention of both law enforcement and cartel.
The bosses seek retribution. Suspicions turn to the boyfriend, whose fortunes are on the rise as theirs decline. Resentments build. And a plan intended to free them once and for all only launches a chain of events ending in murder.
